Charlestown Nevis (June 21, 2006) The Nevis Island Administration has responded to the needs of the Special Education Unit (Special Ed) by making available a brand new home for the students at Prospect Estate.
The school's construction, which is expected to commence shortly, will consist of a motor skilled development room, a home skilled training room, a counselling room, staff room, technology activity room, five bath rooms, four class rooms, one bath room and two utility rooms.
At a brief but significant ground breaking ceremony on Tuesday June 20, saw Principal Ms Adella Francis and one of her students broke ground to signal the commencement of construction of the single storey building which would be of a concrete and steel structure.
This project is the third component of the Basic Education Project which consisted of the construction of two schools, the St. Johns

Primary and the Special Education Unit as well as the expansion of the Charlestown Secondary School. The Basic Education Project is funded by the Caribbean Development Bank in excess of EC$8 million.
The Nevis Island Administration had acquired some two acres of land adjacent to the Ivor Walters Primary School formerly, the Prospect Primary School from four land owners for the construction of the new school.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Communication and Public Works, the Hon Mr. A Michael Perkins expressed his satisfaction. He noted that the administration had been successful in the ground breaking and construction of the Charlestown Secondary School expansion project and the St. Johns Primary School.
"Today is the moment for the children of the Special Education Unit. The unfolding of the school that would be constructed of concrete and steel will do well for the development of these children and the education system of Nevis," said Minister Perkins.
He observed that the government was spending over EC$1 million on the project (Special Ed) which he hoped would be completed by early next year. Special mention was made of the young and talented team spearheading the project which consists of Mr. Denzil Stanley, Director of Public Works; Mr. Deorah Pemberton, Project Manager and Mr. Kurvin Wallace, Clerk of Works.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Elvin Bailey in his brief address to the gathering, said that the building of the Special Education Unit was part of the overall development that the Nevis Island Administration and the Ministry of Education had in mind for the development of the youths on the island, "those who are challenged and those who are special."
~~Adz:Right~~Brief remarks were also given by Deputy Premier and Area representative, the Hon Mr. Malcolm Guishard, Mr. Ernie Stapleton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communication and Public Works, gave an overview of the project and representative of the contracting firm, LEFCO, Mr. Carl Lewis expressed the company's approval.
The Special Education Unit is at present being housed at the St. Thomas' Primary School.
