The Valley, Anguilla - Nineteen year old Chesney Hughes is making waves as Anguilla’s new batting sensation. The powerfully built left hander who will be twenty in January is cautiously optimistic about his future.
In a recent interview conducted in St.Maarten with Nevis Television Channel 8, during the NAGICO one day finals, Hughes affirmed that his heart is with the Windies. “I have been asked that question many times. I know England wants me but my heart is with the Windies. Right now I am just taking it one day at a time as I develop my game. England has provided the opportunity for me to grow and develop and I am happy for that”.
Hughes, who had an excellent season with Derbyshire in the English leagues, was actually named that county’s player of the year. He has been referred to as ‘the most researched player’ in England during the last season.
When asked about his superb 140 versus Nevis in the NAGICO series, Hughes modestly attributed his runs to a ‘good batting track’ but indicated that he did enjoy that particular chanceless knock.
He had big intentions for the finals versus Antigua but got his bubble slightly burst when he was bowled for just 3 runs.
However in the recent practice games versus the Windwards when the Leewards lost 2-0, he could feel comforted to know that he produced the highest individual score of 49 for the Leewards.
Making it into the Leewards team was the first step. Hughes now intends to use the opportunity afforded during the WICB regional 50 over competition which bowls off tomorrow to truly make a name for himself on the Caribbean scene.
Where will it all end? Only time will tell but without doubt this is one young man who knows what he wants; has the skills to get it and intends to do so.
