CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (June 21, 2006) -- Premier of Nevis Hon Vance Amory welcomed the visit of a team lead by High Commissioner to Canada His Excellency Mr. Michael Welch to Nevis earlier this week and noted that he was confident Nevis would continue to receive assistance from Canada.
"I was very pleased to meet with him and to share our mutual experiences and interests and I do believe that we can see Canada providing additional help for Nevis as the years go by," he said.
Mr. Amory's comment followed a courtesy call by Commissioner Welsh and his team: Ms Kathryn Dunlop, Head of the Development Section of the Canadian High Commission, Mr. Paul McGinnis, Director of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Programme and Mr. Stephen Paape Programme Analyst of CIDA at his official office at the Bath Hotel on Monday June19, 2006.
According to Premier Amory, Nevis was very fortunate for the Canadian Commissioner and his team's visit to the island. He said some of some of their discussions included the assistance given to Nevis by the Canadian government in the areas of education and infrastructural development particularly in water and the provision of schools since they had completely funded the St Thomas Primary School.
"I raised with them the ongoing support which we would like to see Canada provide for Nevis and I indicated to them that we would send our request for assistance for additional development, especially in education where we would want them to enable us to upgrade the Votech Centre and things like that and he [Mr. Welsh] has promised to return to Nevis in short order but on leaving expressed his great joy and surprise at the way Nevis has developed," Mr. Amory disclosed.
