What would you like to see at this year’s Carnival?

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS December, the month in which the Federation celebrates its National Carnival, rapidly approaches, SKNVibes PEP spoke to a number of people to find out what they would like to see during the festivities.

Over the years, many people have been complaining about how boring carnival has been and the lack of interesting entertaining events, as well as the revamping of the Carnival Committee.

Therefore, SKNVibes PEP asked a number of people the following question: “What would you like to see at this year’s Carnival?

Ronette said although her input might be a bit too late for this year, she would love to see a roof over Carnival Village so that “I would not have to run for shelter in my five-inch heels when attending various shows”.

“I would like to see a bigger street parade,” said Kally.

On the condition of anonymity, a young man said he would like to see more pep and band clashes taking place.

Kittitian rapper SMI said, “I want to see more people participating instead of being spectators in the carnival activities.”

Karrisa said she would like to see more local artistes being recognised and also more troupes on parade, while CJ said she would like to see some new calypsonians.

“We need a larger form of advertisement; it’s about time we put St. Kitts on the map and invest in the gem of the Caribbean. We already know how to party, so now we just need to know how to market it to the world,” said a young man name Stetson.

Mr. Sturge said, “It’s probably too late but we definitely need a festival village like what we used to have with the Grand Market so that people can have a place to hang out nightly.”

“We need to see some better costumes,” said Treasure, while band lover K said there needs to be new criteria for judging Road March.

Last was Seth who said, “More participation! People need to stop criticising carnival and make an effort and do their part if they want St. Kitts’ Carnival to be any better. Do something besides talk…play mass, join a troupe, open a booth, volunteer for something, buy local music, go to the shows, etc.”

The National Carnival Committee has recently seen some changes. Clement ‘Monarch’ O’Garro has replaced Gus Williams as Chairperson and Shannon Hawley was appointed his Deputy.

Many persons are hoping to see a change and improvement in the activities as there are now new faces heading the Committee.

So far, this media house has learnt that the Soca Monarch Competition will be reintroduced to the festivities. Saturday, October 16 will see the official launch of the National Carnival, which will be declared officially opened on December 17.
