BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THIS Saturday (Oct. 16) downtown Basseterre will be transformed into a carnival-like atmosphere, as the scheduled activities of the 2010 National Carnival will be officially launched.

The event will kick off in grand style, starting with a parade from Warner Park at 3:00 p.m. as the new Carnival Committee is determined to make a remarkable first impression.

According to newly-appointed Chairman Clement Ogarro, the parade would feature winners from last year's carnival including the reigning Calypso Monarch, King Socrates; National Carnival Queen Sudeakka Francis; Female Calypso Monarch Singing Jackie; Junior Calypso Queen; Best of the Rest winner; Caribbean Talented Teen winner; and Road March Champs Grandmasters. They would be joined by King Astro, the reigning Culturama Calypso King, and reigning Culturama Queen Verna Grant.

He said a folklore section, an awareness section, the Community Drum Corps and Washington Archibald High School Cheerleaders would also be on parade.

Revellers will also get a sneak peak at  some of this year's J'Ouvert and Grand Parade costumes by Red Devils, Phunn Vibes, Xpress Events, Inferno and Phunmakers.

The six contestants competing for this year’s National Carnival Queen title will also be introduced to the public along with those of the Miss Talented Teen Pageant.

The parade will conclude at Bank Street, where the official launch ceremony will take place with remarks from a number of officials.

The official 2010-2011 Carnival Slogan will also be announced and this will be followed by a number of performances, after which the Kollision Band will conclude the event with a jam session.

The official opening of the National Carnival will take place on December 17 with a number of activities, including shows, fetes and parades.
