BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 17TH 2010 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is of the view the joint observance of Caribbean Statistics Day and the World Statistics Day, October 15 and 20 respectively will engender a greater awareness of Statistics and its role across a wide array of activities, ranging from individual activities to matters relating to the social, environmental and economic aspects of the country.
“It is hoped that this initiative will create a greater awareness of and appreciation for statistics, foster increased collaboration with persons producing statistics within line ministries, agencies and government departments and sensitize users of the importance of Statistics,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who is also Minister of Finance.
In a national broadcast, Prime Minister Douglas hoped that observance will aid in propelling statistics higher on the development agenda not only in St. Kitts and Nevis but throughout the region.
“Statistics are important in every keg of the development process. They are also important in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Statistics contribute to sound decision and policy making in businesses as well as government. Researchers and academia also recognize the use and importance of statistics as they develop new theories and analyze findings,” Dr. Douglas said.
He said that over the years, the Statistics Department has been producing statistics, which is comparable across the region and which is used regularly in making informed policy decisions.
“The National Accounts, Balance of Payments, the Consumer Price Index, Trade and Population and Housing are just a few of the areas. All of these outputs results from the hard work, professionalism and integrity demonstrated on a regular basis by the staff of the department,” the Prime Minister said.
He used the opportunity to recognize and thank the persons in the Statistics Department as well as in the line ministries, agencies and private individuals who contribute to the statistical system.
“Recognition must also be given to the agencies such as the ECCB, OECS, CARICOM, UNDP, CARTAC, CDB and ILO who have dedicated their efforts and resources to strengthening statistical capacity,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
This year’s theme - “Celebrating the many achievements of official Statistics” is premised on the values of service, professionalism and integrity.”
