Nicola Thompson wins inaugural Teacher’s Pageant

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – NICOLA THOMPSON, who represented the discipline of Arts, amassed 171.5 points to win the inaugural St. Kitts Teachers Union Pageant at Carnival Village on Friday, October 15.

    Deslyn Richards, Miss Music, took the First Runner-up position with 167.8 points while the Second Runner-up was Aylahnique Thompson, Miss Technology, with 165.5 points.

     

    In addition to winning the crown, Thompson walked away with the Best Talent and Best Interview segments while Richards won the Creative Professional Wear segment and Michelle Taylor, Miss Physical Education, won the prize for Best Evening Wear.

     

    Best Promotional Speech went to Asha Jones-Woodley, Miss Home Economics, who also captured the awards for Miss Amity and Most Photogenic.

     

    The other contestants were Miss Humanities Claire Ottley and Miss Foreign Languages Tasanna Kelly.
    The pageant, which got off to a late start and was also affected by rain for the first half an hour after it started, had an excellent turnout.

     

    Thompson, who teaches at the Basseterre High School, performed consistently throughout the night and amazed everyone with her beautiful voice during the Talent segment, singing ‘Believe’ by Fantasia.

    Many persons also commented on the high standard and quality of performances by all the teachers who did exceptionally well in each segment.

     

    At the end of the pageant, Eloise Herbert and Loughlin Tatem, hostess and host respectively, announced that there would be a Caribbean Teacher’s Pageant in 2011 with teachers from around the region participating.

     

    The band for the night was 4 Play and side acts included modelling of designs by Faith Benjamin, Rolensha, Shakal and Fiire and Flash Dancers.

     

    The pageant was held under the theme ‘Building Strategic Partnerships Investing in Teachers Now’.

     

    According to pageant organiser Jennifer Belle, in a previous release, the vision of the Union, which would be realised through the hosting of the pageant, is to promote the teaching profession, market the concept of the teachers union and to raise revenue for the projects and programmes of the SKTU.
