National Carnival launch attracts huge crowd

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – HUNDREDS of people attended the launch of the National Carnival 2010/2011 Activities in Basseterre last Saturday (Oct. 16) and witnessed, among other things, the release of the Carnival’s slogan - ‘Fun, fete, bacchanal, it’s sugar mas’ 2k10/2k11’.

The launch commenced with an exciting parade of last year’s winners, folklore and a teaser of some of the J’Ouvert Morning troupes that will hit the streets in December.

The Grand Masters Band and HI-5 sound systems provided music while revellers jammed through the streets of Basseterre as though carnival had already begun.

Later in the evening the parade concluded at Bank Street, where the excitement continued with a number of performances by Singing Jackie, King Socrates and Hot Rod, among others. A number of models also displayed costumes to the large and enthusiastic crowd.

But what seemed to be the most anticipated segment of the event for the night, was when the six beauties for this year’s National Carnival Queen Pageant went on stage and introduced themselves. Many persons tried to get closer to the stage in order to get a good view of the contestants, who were all attired in purple one-shoulder dresses.

The contestants are Rolhensha Henry, Judy Dupont, Abigail Liburd, Kimani Phillip, Michelenia Mills and Iantavian Queeley.

The eight Talented Teen contestants also introduced themselves and remarks were given by Carnival Chairman Clement Ogarro and Minister responsible for Carnival Hon. Marcella Liburd, who promised that this year’s carnival would be a great one and one to remember.

One woman was heard saying that she was impressed with the launch and hopes the committee keeps it up for the carnival season. Another woman said she felt like it was already carnival time and that is the way a launch should be.

The St Kitts-Nevis Carnival is now being  branded 'Sugar Mas' and takes place this year from December 17 to January 3.

The event climaxed with a jam session with the young entertainers of Kollision Band.
