Results of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga spelling bee competition 2010

    Basseterre, St Kitts (19 October 2010)  The Rotary Club of Liamuiga (RCL) hosted its Spelling Bee Competition 2010 for Primary Schools on Thursday, 30 September 2010.  The Competition was held in the ballroom of the Royal St Kitts Hotel.  

    Major sponsors of the RCL Spelling Bee Competition 2010 were Seven Seas, through their distributor in the Federation, Ram's Trading and Western Union of Jamaica.

     

    The Winner of the Competition was Missy Quiandra Pemberton Grade 6 student of the Maurice Hiller Memorial School who walked away with the prizes of a contribution to her Education Savings Fund of One Thousand Dollars ($1,000), a Gift Basket from Seven Seas, the Winner’s Trophy and a trip to St. Lucia to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee Final..  

    She earned for her School the First Prize School Award in the sum of One thousand Dollars ($1,000) in the form of any combination of educational facilities such as Internet Set-up, Computer Network Installation, Cataloging of Library Books, Purchase of Books For Library or Office Equipment Repairs.  She also earned for her teacher who assisted her in preparation for the Competition, Mr, Aurelstine Warner, the First Prize Teacher Award of Three Hundred ($300).

    For the first time, this year our winner of the RCL Competition will be sponsored to attend the Haliborange/Rotaract Regional Spelling Bee Final sponsored by Seven Seas which is this year being held in St. Lucia on 13 November.  Sponsorship by Seven Seas includes the airfare and accommodation for the winner, one (1) parent and one (1) member of the RCL to attend the Competition.  The Rotary Club of Liamuiga will sponsor the teacher responsible for training Missy Pemberton to accompany the mentioned  party to St Lucia. 
     
    The Haliborange/Rotaract Regional Spelling Bee Final sponsored by Seven Seas will have its fourth outing this year and will have participants from Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St Lucia, St Vincent and the new participant for this year, St Kitts.

     

    Our Second Prize Winner was Andrew Douglas of the Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary School who won a contribution to his Education Savings Fund of Eight Hundred Dollars ($800).  He also earned for his School a contribution to educational facilities valued at Eight Hundred Dollars ($800) and for his teacher, Ms. Ruth Bedford, the sum of Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars ($250).

    Our Third Prize Winner was Jevon Williams of the Cayon Primary School who won a contribution to his Education Savings Fund of Five Hundred Dollars ($500).  He also earned for his School a contribution to educational facilities valued at Five Hundred Dollars ($500) and for his teacher, Mrs. Angela Matthew, the sum of Two Hundred Dollars ($200).

    Twenty (20) of the Primary Schools in St Kitts participated in the Competition by submitting one (1) spelling champion from each School who was a student at the school at the time of our Competition.  The schools entered in the Competition and the participants were as follows:

    3. Cayon Primary represented by Jevon Williams
    4. Deane Glasford Primary represented by Irvicia David

    6. Dr. William Connor Primary represented by Jhordan Hewlett
    7. Edgar T. Morris Primary represented by Tarique Morris
    8. Estridge Primary represented by Zhanel Aker
    9. George Moody Stuart Primary represented by Jermellia Henry
    10. Immaculate Conception Catholic School represented by Taejad Richards
    11. Irishtown Primary represented by Juliana Pemberton
    12. Joshua Obadiah Williams Primary represented by Andrew Douglas
    13. Maurice Hiller Memorial School represented by Ouiandra Pemberton
    14. Newton Ground Primary represented by Dottica Taylor
    15. Saddlers Primary represented by Zubaidah French
    16. St. Paul’s Primary represented by Sabrina Sutton
    17. Sandy Point Primary represented by Jenae Rouse
    18. Seventh Day Adventist School represented by Khadejah Blanchette
    19. Tucker Clarke Primary represented by Scharvin Edwards
    20. Tyrell Williams Primary represented by Denaldo Huggins
     
    Each participant received a Competition T/shirt, a dictionary, a Certificate of Participation from the RCL and a knapsack from Western Union Jamaica complete with notebooks and pencils.  The seventeen (17) participants who did not place in the top three each received a contribution to his/her Education Savings Fund of Fifty ($50).

     

    The RCL extends heartfelt thanks to the Minister of Education, the Honourable Nigel Carty, for his support and that of his staff with this Competition and for his assistance with the presentation of prizes at the end of the Competition. 

     

    Thanks are also extended to our sponsors Seven Seas which was represented by Regional Manager, Mr. Randy Marshall, and local distributor representatives of Ram’s Trading Limited, Mrs. Kiran Chandiramani-Perkins and Ms Shirley Julius;  and Western Union Jamaica which was represented by Western Union St. Kitts representative, Mr. Elroy (Scout) Lewis.

     

    The RCL expresses appreciation and thanks to the Schools which facilitated entrance of their students in our Competition and the teachers who prepared the contestants for the Competition.
