BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Federation’s National Carnival, now branded ‘Sugar Mas’, will commence with the official opening on December 17 and concludes on January 3, 2011.
The launch of activities took place last Saturday (Oct. 16) in downtown Basseterre following an impressive parade.
The 2010/2011 activities will jump start with ‘In The Spirit of Christmas’ from December 6 to 10. On December 11, the Carnival Queen Fashion Show will be held in Nevis.
On the following day there will be horse racing and entertainment at Beaumont Park followed by the LIME Calypso Semi-Finals on December 16.
The Official Opening Ceremony will take place on December 17 along with the Female Calypso Bacchanal and Best Of The Rest Competition later in the evening.
The Soca Monarch Competition will be revived on the following night while a number of boys and girls will compete for the Prince and Princess titles on December 18.
The J’Ouvert Morning jam session, which is normally held on December 26, will this year be celebrated on the following day because Boxing Day falls on a Sunday. However, Sunday will therefore see ‘Beaumont Park Boxing Day Horse Racing’.
In the evening, following J’Ouvert, contestants from eight schools will vie for the title of Miss Talented Teen along with the Junior Calypso Show.
The Sensational Six beauties will then take the stage on December 28 to find out who will replace Sudeakka Francis as National Carnival Queen, while on the following night a number of calypsonians will go up against King Socrates for the Calypso Monarch title.
Carnival Village will come alive once again on December 30 with over 10 beauties vying for the Miss Haynes Smith Talented Teen title.
January 1 the streets of Basseterre will be transformed into a colorful folklore avenue with the New Year’s Day Grand Parade and Children’s Carnival.
January 2 will see a Carnival CoolDown Beach Bash while National Carnival Last Lap will be held on the following day, bringing Sugar Mass to an end with parades of troupes and street jam.
