Police destroy over 1 000 marijuana plants
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A Sandy Point man is currently nursing a gunshot wound sustained during a robbery perpetrated against him.
According to a police press release, the incident occurred in the evening of Friday, October 22, 2010 in Sandy Point.
“...at approximately 10:20 p.m. police officers from the Sandy Point Police Station responded to a report of a shooting at Mount Idle, Sandy Point. Police enquiries revealed that James Liburd 53 years old of Crab Hill, Sandy Point an employee of Annie Jones Bakery was shot in his right leg and robbed of an undisclosed sum of money and some other items while he was walking across the alley below the Jones Bakery.”
The release further explains that the injured man was transported to the hospital by members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF), where he is “warded in stable condition”.
“The scene was processed by officers from the Crime Scene Department (CSD)”, the release indicates and further explains that “there are no suspects at this time but investigations are ongoing”.
Meanwhile, members of the Police Force’s Anti-Narcotics Unit executed an exercise on the same day Liburd was shot and were successful in locating and destroying more that 1 000 marijuana (cannabis) plants.
The police communiqué informs that the operation was a “marijuana extradition exercise” conducted in the “St. Pauls Foot Hills” area.
“Six (6) plots of land with marijuana growing, the plants ranged from seedlings to eight (8) feet in height. The plants were counted and amounted to a total of one thousand and fifty-three (1053). The cannabis plants were uprooted and later destroyed by burning,” the release reads.
It also indicates that the authorities have yet to penalise person(s) for this offence.
The police are asking persons who may have information pertinent to the shooting and robbery of Liburd to contact the Sandy Point Police Station at 465-6261 and the St. Pauls Police Station at 465-6281 in reference to the marijuana find. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) located at Police Headquarters, Basseterre can also be contacted at 465-2241 extension 230.
