BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, OCTOBER 27TH 2010 (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas has congratulated the new Barbados Prime Minister, Hon. Hon. Freundel Stuart and expressed sympathy on the passing of his predecessor, the Hon. David Thompson.
“It is with a great sense of loss that we learned of the untimely passing of a dear friend and colleague, the late Prime Minister of Barbados, Honourable David Thompson Q.C. who succumbed to his illness today. On behalf of my Government, the citizens of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis and on my own behalf, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Barbados and his dear wife and family, who are left to mourn the loss of a leader, statesman, and son of the region,” said Prime Minister Douglas in a message to Prime Minister Staurt.
Dr. Douglas told Prime Minister Stuart that though Mr. Thompson’s tenure at the helm of Government was interrupted by sudden illness and ultimately his premature passing, there is no doubt that the contribution made by the late Prime Minister, was sufficiently significant to positively impact the quality of life for the people of his beloved country.
“As one of the region’s legal luminaries he was able to draw on his keen understanding of due process to strengthen his intervention on issues affecting the region, most notably our continued quest for full integration,” said Dr. Douglas who added that the “People of St. Kitts and Nevis warmly remember Prime Minister Thompson who frequented our shores from time to time, and we feel blessed and comforted to have been graced with his presence and therefore cherish our fond memories of this truly inspiring man.”
“I consider myself honoured to have borne witness to his commitment to Barbados and the CARICOM region and will always respect and appreciate his devotion,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who expressed an assurance that “his vision for the social development of his people and the economic advancement of his country will be given the same prominence under your able leadership.”
Dr. Douglas told the new Barbados Prime Minister he “looks forward to working with you as you take on the mantle bequeathed to you by the man who we will always remember as the embodiment of a true Caribbean stalwart.”
