Basseterre, St. Kitts – ALL roads lead to Beaumont Park tomorrow (Nov. 7) as a top calypsonian from Antigua will be performing at the launch of the Proud Sounds and Legends Calypso Tents.

The event will feature performances by some of the calypsonians from both tents who will be competing for the crown at this year’s National Calypso Monarch Competition.

There would also be a special performance by Antigua’s Algie ‘Dr. Principle’ DeSilva. He will be singing ‘This Island’ and Crafty Politician’, the songs he sang at the 2010 Antigua Carnival.

He said that ‘This Island’ relates to a couple who went abroad to live for many years, and after visiting to their homeland and seeing the many changes they changed their minds about returning there to live; while ‘Crafty Politicians’ addresses people in general, telling them that they are the ones who make the politicians.

According to Jacqline McClene of Legends Entertainment, two other calypsonians would be coming to the island to perform during the calypso tents. She said this is being done as a cultural exchange by the Calypso Association to preserve calypso music as it is becoming a dying art.

McClene further stated that the association in Antigua and that of St. Kitts have decided to come together and have an exchange of calypsonians each year during both islands’ carnival celebrations.

Dr. Principle began his calypso journey four years ago and was awarded the First Runner-up position in the 2009 Antigua’s Calypso King Competition.
