    Charlestown, Nevis - The annual Giant Malt sponsored inter Primary Schools Football league sponsored by Giant malt, got on the way on Friday 5th November.

     

    The opening ceremony was held at the Bath Village Playing field, the venue for the games this year, due to work currently being done at the ETWillet Park.

     

    The brief ceremony was chaired by former National Footballer and Coach at the St.Thomas’ Primary School, Mr. Eddy Caines who asked the young Fotballers to focus on the little things that would motivate them to excel.

     

    Principal Education Officer, Mrs. Lornette Queeley –Connor, reminded the youngsters that they were not only representing themselves, but their various schools, communities and may even go on to represent the island and maybe even Regional teams.

     

    Newly elected President of the Nevis Amateur Football Association, Mr. Colin Walwyn spoke to his Association’s involvement with ‘grassroots Football’ and indicated that they would do all in their power to help the youngsters to develop their skills.  He also urged more females to get involved in the sport.

     

    Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Mr. Alsted Pemberton was high in praise for the Department of Education for their continued efforts in helping the children to recognize that there is a positive link between academics and sports.  He lauded Sports Coordinator Lydia Thompson Claxton for her tremendous efforts in coordinating the event year after year. He also declared the league officially open.

     

    The vote of thanks was delivered by The Sports Coordinator herself Lydia Claxton who apologized for the absence of sponsor’s representative Noah mills who was originally present but due to the late start, had to move on to another engagement.

     

    The teams present then engaged in shooting contest which also involved the Coaches.

     

    Matches are slated to commence this week.
