September Assizes closes; 10 cases disposed, 17 traversed

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE September 2010 Criminal Assizes closed on Thursday (Nov. 4) with the disposal of 10 of the 32 cases scheduled to be heard, while the remainder was traversed to the January 2011 Criminal Assizes.

     

    Out of the 32 cases, 19 were traversed from the May 2010 Assizes, while the remaining 13 were new cases.

     

    Out of the 19 traversed cases, only four were disposed of while six of the new cases were tried.
    Out of the 10 disposed cases, six were found guilty while three were returned with not guilty verdicts and one hung jury.

     

    The disposed cases include that of Wendell Prentice, who was found not guilty of rape; Outic Gillard, who was found not guilty of burglary; and Keithly Griffin whose case of unlawful carnal knowledge ended in a hung jury.

     

    The other disposed cases are those of William Gift, who was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm; Hani Lake, who was found not guilty of possession of house breaking implements; Rawle Benjamin and Glenville Maynard were jointly charge with robbery and found guilty; Eldean Phipps was found guilty of shooting with intent; Hance Lawrence, who pleaded guilty to possession of firearm and possession of ammunition; and Leo Sutton; who was found guilty of possession of house breaking implements.

     

    Among those cases traversed to the January 2011 Assizes are five on murder charges, four on robbery, two unlawful carnal knowledge, two on rape charges, one on fraud and false pretence charges.
