Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 09, 2010 (SKNIS): The Labour Department is set for an intensive three days of Public Relations regarding current employment issues as outlined in the Decent Work Country Programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Labour Commissioner Mr. Spencer Amory said his Ministry started activities related to the Decent Work Country Programme earlier this year when they held a two-day sensitization meeting on May 12-13 to design and implement a local chapter of the Programme which is being done in the OECS.
Mr. Amory said that there exists such widespread concerns in the world of work, that the programme seeks to further the following strategic goals of the International Labour Organization. These include the Promotion of full employment; Protection of Workers Rights; Social Protection and; Social discourse between stakeholders in the world of work.
The Labour Commissioner told SKNIS that Mr. Geir Myrstad (Meeeerstar) of the Regional ILO office is in the Federation to further sensitize the population on the Decent Work Programme. He added that at the two-day launch earlier in the year, a number of priority areas were identified for the Federation including Policy and Legislative Development; HIV and AIDS; the Socio Economic Realities that are confronting us as well as the development of social safety nets and schemes.
On Wednesday November 09, Mr. Myrstad (meeerstar) made courtesy calls on the Trade and Labour Union and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
On November 10th he will facilitate a Decent Work Country Programme Seminar, starting at 9:00 a.m. at the NEMA Conference Room. A panel discussion will be held at ZIZ studios following the news package on Wednesday.
A Press Conference will follow on Thursday, November 11, at 3:00 p.m. also at the NEMA Conference Room to discuss the Decent Work Country Programme and other labour-related issues.
Mr. Myrstad (meeerstar) will also visit Nevis on Thursday where he will also conduct a seminar and will meet with various Government Officials.
