BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – LOCAL top female DJ Sweet Sister Sensia continues to make waves and shows no sign of slowing down, as she recently received rave reviews after her latest performance at a gig in St. Maartin.

Sister Sensia, whose real name is Michelle Stokes, travelled to St. Maarten with a number Caribbean of DJs to compete in the Female DJ Caribbean Showdown held at the Sports Hall in Galisby, St. Maarten on Saturday, November 6.

The event was organised Belly D of 95.69 SOS Radio to showcase the skills of some of the Caribbean’s top female DJs who are making waves in the business.

The other participants were from Guadeloupe, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Antigua and host country St. Maarten.

“The event was crazy…the crowd was real decent. When I got there at first there was a lot of people just sitting in the stands and I was like, ‘Okay this is like a show’, but by the time the second person came on, the floor was ram, the stands was ram, the place was just off the chain.

“I must say my experience in St. Maarten was wonderful; I will go back any day. The girls were all great and I had a ball playing next to all of them. I went there I represented SK and made my peeps there proud. I felt great to see someone from SK came on stage waving his SK flag and shake my hand right after, and telling me how proud he was to be a Kittitian…thanks to me.

“The hugs, the love I got after I performed made me open up my eyes to a lot of things. And trust me, I don't plan to give up no time soon. Yesterday, I received calls from St. Maarten telling me I was the talk of St. Maarten. People calling in and saying they tip their hats to the SK girl, she was mad. All I could do is smile to myself and say job well done Michelle, job well done,” she said.

The female DJ, who is employed at Freedom Radio, has been in the business for a number of years. She honed her talents at Sugar City Rock before becoming one of the highest in demand to perform at local clubs every weekend. She had also received numerous requests to perform on overseas gigs.
Stokes said her key to success is all about her belief.

“Never give up, believe in what you believe in and keep reaching for it. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do it or you wouldn’t amount to nothing. Prove them wrong…that's my thing. When you’re talked about and people feel like you will not amount to anything, show them different,” she said.

Stokes said she is thankful to God for keeping her going strong and her fans as well as her parents for their support.

“The love I get from people who believe in me and push me to excel more is what keeps me going. Even on radio, the fans who stick with me through all my shows, in the clubs on TV, my fans are who keep me going, because I know I have to do this for them. And even the ones who don’t believe in me, I still do this for them.

“I live my life everyday making my mom and dad proud, making sure they can hold up their heads high in any crowd. Feeling proud of the daughter they have,” she said.

Stokes said she intends to encourage aspiring female DJs by organising a party on December 4, where female DJs would be asked to mix three tracks and the best mix would win a pair of Clarks, compliment Athletes Foot.

“It's my way of bringing out more female DJs in this business, because it’s too much dominated by men. I want to see my females more into what I do and realise how fun it can be,” she said.

Stokes said she aims to put St. Kitts on the map as was done by other DJs for their country.

“I want us to be recognised in more ways than one and as talented. Most of the times, DJs out there who are hitting it big are men. Well, this is one woman who wouldn’t stop at anything until she reaches that stage.”
