Charlestown, Nevis - Two Nevisian Football Coaches recently benefitted from a Coaching workshop in St.Kitts.
The two Coaches involved were: Alex Claxton who recently returned to Nevis and has again picked up the mantle as Coach for his beloved Bath United team and Leroy ‘Jun-Jun’ Sweeney who is the Football Coach within the Ministry of Sports.
Claxton explained that the workshop was organized by the St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association in conjunction with FIFA and focused on ‘Grass roots Football’ which involves children ages 6-12.
Some of the topics covered included Marketing and Communications which discussed innovative ways of reaching out to parents and children.
Claxton described the workshop as a ‘step in the right direction’ even as he observed that the Education Department is currently hosting its annual Giant Malt sponsored Primary School league. He recognized that the various Coaches for the schools would have been doing a good job but noted that what was learnt at the workshop would only help to enhance the overall product within the Primary Schools and the community on a whole.
Leroy ‘Jun- Jun’ Sweeney was quick to point out that the coaching workshop stressed more on the young players enjoying themselves at that tender age than to be so competitive. Claxton also noted that at that age (6-12) the real competition normally existed between the parents, Teachers and Coaches, while the children really just want to have fun.
It was noted that some time in the not too distant future, members of the St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association will be journeying over to Nevis, to make an official launch of such a program for Nevisian youngsters.
Meanwhile, Leroy “Jun-Jun’ Sweeney left the island yesterday for Trinidad where he will be participating in another Football Coaching clinic. He noted that his trip was organized by the St.Kitts-Nevis Football Association and that there were three other Coaches from St.Kitts who will also be attending the Coaching clinic as well.
He indicated that the workshop would be a follow through on what was covered in St.Kitts with a lot of emphasis being placed on the grass roots program where different coaching techniques would be required for various ages of children.
The course will be conducted at the Learning Center in Trinidad and will commence today Thursday 11th November and will last for eight days.
