ZIZ Radio launches Competitions for 50th Anniversary

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A special ceremony was held yesterday (Nov. 10) at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Headquarters at Lime Kiln to launch a number of exciting competitions to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of ZIZ Radio, which would be celebrating that milestone in March 2011.

     

    Several primary and high school teachers and students, as well as employees of ZIZ and members of various media houses were present at the launch.

     

    It was announced that the general public would be asked to participate in five competitions – Essay, Song, Calypso, Poster and Slogan - in which prizes of over $30 000 would be awarded.

     

    The Essay competition is for high school students only in St. Kitts and Nevis and must be between 750-1 000 words in length.

     

    The topic of the Essay is ‘Shaping the Future of the Nation through Radio Communication’ and must be submitted no later than January 31, 2011.

     

    A cash prize of $1 500 will be given to the winner while $1 000 and $600 will be awarded to the First and Second Runners-up respectively.

     

    The Song competition is open to all songwriters, lyricists and music composers; it must be their original work and not previously published.

     

    The entry should be no more than four minutes in duration and can be submitted in Calypso, Reggae, Country, Soul, R&B, Hip-Hop, Rap, Jazz, Disco or any other genre.

     

    This competition is open to soloists, duets, trios and quartets, and the recording of the song can be sent by compact disc or mp3 format.

     

    The first prize winner will receive $3 000 plus a trophy, second prize will receive $2 000 and the third prize winner $1 000. The deadline for this competition is January 24, 2011.

     

    The Poster competition is eligible for children between the ages of nine and 12 and the acceptable medium are water colours, crayon, poster paints, collage and electronic. No identifying mark or information should be put on the poster except the cover sheet.

     

    The poster should be no less than 8.5X11 inches and multiple entries will be accepted. Two prizes will be awarded in this particular competition; one is for computer generated and the other for free hand (natural talent).

     

    The first prize for the best free hand (natural talent) poster will receive $1 250 and the best computer generated poster will receive $1 000, while the second prize for both categories will be $750 and third prize $500.

     

    The deadline for the Poster competition is January 31, 2011.

     

    The Slogan competition should be no more than eight syllables and is open to any resident of the Federation and nationals living abroad.

     

    The slogan should reflect ZIZ’s contribution to the Federation and must be submitted no later than January 10, 2011.

     

    The winner will receive $600 and a trophy while the second and third prize winners will be awarded $400 and $200 respectively.

     

    Apart from the annual calypso competitions, local calypsonians will have an opportunity to showcase their skills when they compete in the ZIZ’s 50th Anniversary Calypso competition.

     

    The competition is open to all persons who are not of primary school age and who are nationals or residents of St. Kitts and Nevis.

     

    The lyrics of the song should capture the past, present or future of ZIZ Radio, and all calypsoians wishing to participate must be registered by the Jan. 15, 2011.

     

    The Calypso to be performed in this competition must be original and not previously published prior to November 10, 2011.

     

    ZIZ will be seeking 15 finalists to compete in this competition on Saturday, February 5 for a live broadcast of all entries on its radio.

     

    The finals are scheduled for Saturday, February 26, 2011 and each calypsonian will sing one song.

     

    The winner will receive $7 500, First and Second Runners-up $5 000 and $3 000 while non-places will receive $500.
