BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – STUDENTS of the Special Education Unit have been provided an opportunity to improve their tennis skills through the donation of racquets and balls by the St. Kitts and Nevis Table Tennis Association (SKNTTA).
The event took place yesterday (Nov. 11) with a simple but significant ceremony at the Special Education Unit, where a number of racquets and balls were handed over to Special Olympics Head Coach Sylvester Dore by Lavern Merit, President of the SKNTTA.
Dore told the small gathering, which included a number of students, that he is excited about the inclusion of table tennis as one of the disciplines in the Special Olympics. He noted that athletes at the school had seen the tennis table in the building and have indicated their eagerness to ready themselves for upcoming competitions.
Merit said that the association was happy to assist the Special Olympics with whatever equipment it could and hope that within a year or two the nation would see some table tennis heroes.
She declared that the SKNTTA had conducted a coaching stint with a number of students from that learning institution some three weeks ago and they were pleased with the results.
The Special Education Unit is currently celebrating Special Olympics Week under the theme ‘Special Olympics – Much more than just sport’. Teachers and students of the institution are scheduled to march through the streets of Basseterre today as part of the celebration activities.
