BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force are commending members of the public for their tremendous support, as a number of individuals are currently in custody assisting the lawmen with investigations into this morning's robbery of the St. Kitts Cooperative Credit Union Ltd. on New Street, Basseterre.
A release from the Police Public Relations Office reads, “On Wednesday 17th November 2010 at approximately 10:40 a.m. police received a report of a robbery at St. Kitts Co-operative Credit Union Ltd. at New Street Basseterre. Police officers from the Basseterre area responded immediately and their enquiries revealed that three (3) masked men armed with guns entered the St. Kitts Co-operative Unit and robbed the employees of an undisclosed sum of money and cell phones and made their escape.”
The release added that the crime scene was processed by officers from the Crime Scene Department and no suspect was in custody, but investigations were feverishly ongoing.
It also noted that the High Command wished to reassure the general public that all is being done to ensure that St. Kitts and Nevis remain a safe destination to live and visit and that “this robbery is certainly not the norm but is a crime of opportunity, as a number of police officers from the various units were deployed on patrol in the Basseterre area this morning. The High Command is also once again appealing to members of the general public to render their assistance and support in providing information in relation to this matter or any other crime”.
This evening, however, SKNVibes spoke with Assistant Commissioner of Police with responsibility for Crime Joseph Liburd, who informed that since the release was sent some members of the public had responded to the clarion call, which resulted in a number of persons taken into custody and are assisting the police with their investigations into the robbery.
