Press Release

Thursday, November 18th 2010 – Kingston, Jamaica: So far, with a total of 39 matches played, 143 goals scored and an average of 4750 spectators per match, the Digicel Caribbean Cup is ineffaceably etching its name into the annals of Caribbean sport as the premier competition in the region.

So says President of the Caribbean Football Union and CONCACAF and Vice President of FIFA, Jack Warner, who wrote a special message of support for the tournament as it heads towards the final stages.

“Nine weeks have already elapsed and twenty three nations have participated in 39 exuberant matches across eight nation states captivating the hearts of thousands of sports enthusiasts across stadia and millions of fans across the Caribbean, North America and the globe who watched on worldwide television. And there are 16 thrilling encounters yet to come.

“The third edition of the Digicel Caribbean Cup is the biggest ever as the final eight teams in the tournament descend on the beautiful Caribbean French colony of Martinique to challenge for the Digicel Caribbean Cup.

“As President, I wish to offer my sincere thanks and appreciation to Digicel, our title sponsor who has made this all possible. Incrementally, Digicel has not only grown the sport in terms of the number of participating nations but has also expanded the number of venues and countries to facilitate a wider live fan base for the sport. I salute Digicel and its vision for sport in the Caribbean region.

“The football has been exciting. The players have become more tactical and technical and have given to us a level of hope that we can raise our game to be a world competitor. For the dedication and commitment shown over the last nine weeks by our players on and off the field, I wish to express my deepest appreciation and to encourage them to remember that they have not yet arrived but instead they have only just begun.

“On December 5th 2010, a champion will be crowned; the Digicel Caribbean Cup will be decided and another chapter in football history will be closed. No longer will we stand in awe and wonder after others, for in the Digicel Caribbean Cup, we can see our beginnings. No longer will we wonder about the next football generation, for in the Digicel Caribbean Cup the opportunity presents itself for the berthing of home grown talent in territories across the Caribbean.  No longer will we be intimidated by others because, as we play together, we grow stronger and become bolder.

“Today, I am confident that the brilliance of Caribbean football will illuminate the rest of the Caribbean Union. I wish all the teams the best and let us show the world what the Caribbean Football Union can do. We know football.”

The final matches will be aired on FOX Television in North America. Throughout the Caribbean, the finals will be aired live on free to air TV and radio. For more information, including live action and match reports as well as ways to win with Digicel, visit
