Charlestown, Nevis - St.Thomas’ got off to a winning start in the Masters’ Parish league last evening at the Ramsbury grounds, when they edged out St.George’s by 12 runs.
In what turned out to be an intriguing contest, St.Thomas’ captain, Frank Monzac called it right and elected to bat first. The St.George’s bowling was steady for the most part but the lack of fitness on the part of some of the players was exposed in the field. At the end of the fifteen overs of the reduced game, due to a late start, St.Thomas’ had posted a challenging One hundred and fourteen for six.
Charles Morton played an attractive hand for forty-four and Kirt Grant batted well for his 31 runs, to be the main contributors.
St.George’s in response got off to a brisk start and it finally came down to sixteen runs required off the last two overs. When Charles ‘Yellow man’ Hendrickson charged Lincoln Barry in the penultimate over, to be bowled, a relieved St.Thomas’ team celebrated even though it was the fall of the 7th wicket, as St.George’s had been effectively bowled out, as they were playing with only 8 men.
Summarized scores: St.Thomas’ One hundred and fourteen for six: Charles Morton forty-four; Kirt Grant 31
John Maynard 2 for 13; Franklyn Daniel 2 for 13; Sterling Marshall 1 for 33.
St.George’s 102 for 7 (all out): Captain Curtis Morton Sr Forty-six; Ralph Allen sixteen and Earl Rawlins 10.
Frank Monzac 2 for 15; Gaston Eddie 2 for fourteen; Teddy Liburd 1 for 25 and Lincoln Barry 1 for 15.
The tournament continues with a double header this coming Sunday at the same venue when St.Paul’s comes up against St.John’s at 2 pm and St.James’ takes on St.George’s at 5pm. Players are reminded that a grace period of half an hour will be given to ensure that teams can field enough players to play in the match.
