What does the acronym VAT stand for?

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CARIBBEAN people are popularly known for their wit and boldness of expression, either in song or action, and there is no difference among the nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Since the implementation of Value Added Tax in the twin-island Federation, many people have added their own unique meaning of the acronym VAT.

SKNVibes PEP became aware of it and decided to walk through the streets of Basseterre and ask some people what were their interpretation of the acronym.

While most of the responses could not be posted due to their nature, others were because of their wittiness and the hilarity they can bring to readership.

Mellissa, Latoya and Kym said it means “Violence And Thieves”.

A young man named Ravish had a different opinion. He said it means “Voter Assistance Termination”.

Kimmy, a young lady who kept a very serious face during her response, said, “VAT? All VAT means is Vote Against Them the next time around.”

Seth said VAT means “Vision Altering Tax, because after you get your grocery bill you think your seeing a wrong total; therefore, it’s definitely altering your vision”.

“It means Vicious Angry Thieves, because that is all it brought to our lives,” said one woman who preferred to remain nameless.

A DJ, who is popularly known as Wet Dutt, said his definition for the word is “Viagra Angers Testosterone”, while Shanna added that it means “Very Annoying Tax”.

“If I had to give the word a meaning, it would be Vex And Terrible, because it is making every one vex and the government is terrible for implementing it,” said a young factory worker from Tabernacle.

Shay, the last person to whom the question was asked, said, “VAT is anything bad you can think about. It means Victimization And Torture for the poor people.”

No matter what definition one decides to give to the acronym, it is without doubt that it means Value Added Tax.

As of November 1, 2010, Vat is something we all have to deal with in our lives as Kittitians and Nevisians, whether we like it or not. Some people have taken it a bit more serious than others, but there is no harm in having some fun with the acronym. So, leave us your comments and suggest some of your own.
