After weeks of uncertainty, the senior Football league on Nevis will finally commence this weekend. This was confirmed late last evening by President of the Nevis Amateur Basketball Football Association, Mr. Colin Walwyn, after a very important meeting with his executive.
According to Walwyn, the Football season will commence on Saturday 27th November at four thirty pm at the ET Willet Park. There will be a brief opening ceremony which is expected to feature addresses from the President himself and Minister of Sports, Hon Hensley Daniel.
Immediately after the ceremony, the seven registered teams will engage in a knockout competition which will have a trophy as its grand prize. On Sunday 28th the feature game will see the Non Nationals team taking on a Nevis under 23 team which will feature players from the Combined schools and players from other teams who are under 23 years of age. This team will be coached by Leroy ‘Jun-Jun’ Sweeney.
The following weekend, there will be a very important ceremony on Saturday fourth December when the St. Paul’s Football team will journey to Nevis to participate in a ceremony in honour of the late Nevisian Football star, Morell ‘Slybo’ Newton. The bus stand at Stoney Grove will be named in his honour and the ceremony will also feature input from his previous home team, Brand Stoney Grove Strikers. He was also a key player for the St.Paul’s while he was at the top of his game. The ceremony is expected to be held at four pm and at around 7 pm the Stoney Grove Strikers will engage the St.Paul’s team in what is expected to be a crowd pleaser. The Legends cup competition will commence on the very next day-Sunday 5th December and even though a Legend for this year is yet to be identified, the President has informed that the Legend will be selected from the Cotton Ground area.
On the completion of the Legends cup, the teams will then go straight into the regular season.
According to President Walwyn, the fans are in for an exciting season of Football.
