A Fit and Healthy Nation

Press Release

Basseterre, St Kitts – The National Carnival Street Activities Sub-committee has indicated that the Children’s Carnival would focus on a positive message this year. Committee head Vincent Fough outlined the theme after meetings with designer and builder Junior “Melbourne” Constance of St Vincent and the Grenadines and Calvin Tobias of St Kitts Nevis.

Fough stated that “A fit and Healthy Nation” was chosen based on the Food Base Dietary Guidelines produced by the Ministry of Health for St Kitts Nevis. He expressed confidence that the display will capture the imagination of the huge crowds expected to witness the Grand Parade on January 1.

Mr. Fough also added that there would be five sections on display including Fruits and Vegetables, Food from Animals, Careers, Sports, and Sweeteners. The creative designs would be depicted by 300 hundred children from the Primary Schools in St Kitts. Like the past few years, these schools would be zoned in groups of 60.

Children’s Carnival will this year join the Grand Parade on January 1. This change came about as the National Carnival Committee seeks to improve the Sugar Mas’ product without eliminating fundamental areas of creativity. The children’s segment would follow the traditional Folklore and would include the signature Sugar Mill demonstrated in a float sponsored by the Ministry of Health.

Registration has started and can be done at each of the participating schools throughout the island. There is a $20.00 fee for each child, but the National Carnival Committee has agreed to do whatever is necessary to ensure that the children get their opportunity to parade, and display. Last year’s presentation was cut short due to inclement weather.

The Mass Camp is located at the old offices of the Department of Sports in the Pam Tyson Netball Complex, Warner Park. Information about this exhilarating experience can be sourced at the Carnival Secretariat on Victoria Road.
