Calypso lovers in for a treat tonight with Lady Lypstick

Lady Lypstick

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – SHE bashes the men and even judges. She is a ‘no nonsense’ person, bent on speaking her mind and sings about issues specifically affecting women, men and society as a whole.

She is Lady Lypstick, an Antiguan, and will be performing this weekend with the Legends Calypso Tent, starting tonight (Nov. 26) at De House Nitery.

In an interview exclusive with SKNVibes, Lady Lypstick, whose real name is Adelza Sheridan, said she has been in the calypso arena for some five years.

She said it is more about bringing across her message and social commentary and that she takes pride in singing about the happenings in her country.

Sheridan said in 2007 she released a song called ‘It look fishy’, which became a very popular catchy phrase in Antigua. She stated that the song spoke to issues in the calypso Quarterfinals that year and the fact that from the three tents, six males and the same amount of females from each tent had made it to the Semi-Finals.

    “It looked fishy,” she said.

Sheridan said she has never made it to any finals but enjoys bringing across her messages, singing on the issues.

There were a series of rape incidents in Antigua during 2008 and, according to Sheridan, instead of women being totally submissive they should fight back.

Consequently, she released a song entitled ‘Women Fight Back’, in which she advised women, “Even if you have to use your teeth…fight back.”

Sheridan said that calypso lovers in St. Kitts would also enjoy another of her hit singles called ‘Men Bad Lakka Yars’.

Sheridan, who is the President of the Antigua & Barbuda Calypso Association, said the name under which she sings came from a suggestion by her daughter, and that lipstick comes in various flavours and colours “and that’s the type of variety I bring”.

She extended thanks to all those who had made her trip possible, including Socrates Hodge and the Legends Band.

“I need the women to come out in their numbers tonight,” she said.

Sheridan released her fourth album earlier this year titled ‘Wa Brok Cho Way’, which features five tracks, including ‘All Politicians are Friend’.
