BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE driver of a Carib Brewery St. Kitts-Nevis Ltd. truck was earlier this afternoon (Nov. 27) shot while delivering the company’s products to business places in Upper Cayon.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes found that the area was secured by a strong military presence and a number of police officers conducting investigations, while the Carib Brewery delivery truck was parked in an area known as the Circus in Upper Cayon.

On investigation, this media house learned that the driver of the truck, 45-year-old Brian Maynard of Buckley’s Housing, had completed his delivery at one of the business places in the Circus area and was reversing the vehicle to continue his delivery at another business enterprise in the Whites area.

While doing so, however, two armed, masked men appeared and one of them fired a shot, which shattered and passed through the left window of the truck and struck Maynard in his left upper shoulder.

One resident said there were two other occupants on the truck, but they were seated in the rear among the alcohol beverages.

The resident was of the view that the masked men had intended to rob the occupants, but because of the decision the driver took, they were unable to do so.

“The driver must be commended for using his initiative. After he was shot, he immediately changed gear and drove back to the Circus where some persons were. He then jumped out of the truck and ran to a nearby car in which the driver took him to the hospital. A lot of blood was seen on his clothes,” the resident said.

When contacted, Police Press and Public Relations Officer (PRO), Inspector Vaughan Henderson told SKNVibes that at approximately 1:15 p.m. police received a report of a shooting in the Whites area in Upper Cayon and officers from the Cayon Police Station, Criminal Investigations Department, Special Services Unit and the Anti-Gang Unit responded.

Henderson however disagreed with the robbery motive, noting “nothing indicates it was robbery or attempted robbery”. He further noted that evidence points to “shooting with intent” and investigators are vigorously following up on a number of leads, but no suspect has so far been held.

The PRO also said that after being taken in the private vehicle to the Mary Charles Hospital in Molineux, Maynard was later transported by a unit from the Emergency Medical Services to the JNF Hospital, where he is being warded in stable condition.
