Washinton Archiblad High retains Clash of the High Schools’ title

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ONCE again Washington Archibald High has demonstrated that students of that institution possess the ability to captivate audiences with their melodious voices and excellent dance moves, as they retained their title at the second annual Clash of the High Schools Song and Dance Competition.

Performing before a capacity crowd at Carnival Village on Saturday (Nov. 27), Washington Archibald High maintained its dominance, beating Cayon High School and The Immaculate Conception Catholic School into First and Second Runners-up positions respectively.

The other competing High Schools were Saddlers Secondary and the Charles E Mills Secondary, formerly known as Sandy Point High School. Unfortunately, The Verchilds High School opted not to participate this year due to some last minute difficulties.

In the first round of the competition each school had to perform a song followed by a dance, following which Cayon High, Washington Archibald High, The Immaculate Conception Catholic and the Basseterre High went through to the Finals.

The four Finalists then once again performed a song and dance in order for the winner and runners-up to be selected.

According to Cheddi Bradshaw of Island Soul Entertainment, who was responsible for hosting the event, “There were high expectations for Clash of the High Schools 2010 and I feel like the event exceeded the expectations. The aim of the show is to expose talents and that was duly accomplished, but, moreover, we saw a broad cross section of persons from the Federation come together and celebrate these young people and for that we are truly grateful.”

“So now that my team and I have two years of experience, we are beginning now to focus on ironing out the kinks to get closer to perfection in terms of the production of the event,” Bradshaw added.

Bradshaw said he would like to thank the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, the police and all the sponsors for coming on board in such a tremendous way.

He also said that Island Soul Entertainment is on the verge of extending the Clash of the High School brand and the public could look forward for other aspects apart from song and dance in 2011.

There were also featured performances by Dymanyzd, Nicha B, Infamus, Dog, among others, while TNO Sound kept the large crowd entertained with music. The show was hosted by Rolhensha and came to an end sometime after midnight.
