A brand new sports and Community club has been formed in the Stoney Grove area. Emmanuel Jeffers, the President of the organization stated yesterday that the main endeavour of the club will be to bring back the sense of community spirit that previously existed in the area. He noted that during his childhood years, the entire Stoney Grove community operated virtually as ‘one yard’.
Everybody knew everybody; shared with everybody and simply co-existed as a family. That sense of community has been lost over the years and the club would be seeking to resurrect it.
He noted that their first major event will take place this coming Saturday-fourth December 2010. That is when the bus stop located next to the Charlestown Pre School will be named in honour of one of Nevis’ best known and finest Footballers, Morell ‘Slybo’ Newton.
A brief ceremony will be held at 5 pm at the bus stop and this will not only involve the Brand Slybo Stoney Grove Strikers, the former home team of the late player but also his adopted St.Kitts club, St.Paul’s United which he helped to championship honours, at one point of his illustrious career.
Jeffers noted that the top front portion of the building will be clearly marked “The Stoney Grove Sports and Community club’ and immediately below it would be the inscription: “Morrell ‘Slybo’ Newton bus stop’.
The wall facing the Pre School already has the advertising markings of LEFCO, the well established local company that built the bus stop. On the opposite side, would be an impressive portrait of the man himself, Morrell ‘Slybo’ Newton.
On opposite sides to the front of the building will be replica images of the two jerseys worn by ‘Slybo’ as he represented the Stoney Grove and St.Paul’s teams, as the jerseys will be officially retired.
Jeffers further indicated that his club has the full backing and support of the Minister of Sports, the Hon Hensley Daniel and his Ministry as they work towards enhancing the community spirit. Immediately after the ceremony on Saturday, the action will continue at the ET Willet Park when the St.Paul’s and Stoney Grove teams will engage in a historic first match of what will become the annual ‘Slybo’ cup.
Another project that the club will be working on in short order will be a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, right in front of the bus stand.
Jeffers is confident that his club will be long lasting and effective as he has the full support of a hard working executive which comprises of well known sporting personalities on Nevis. The full executive reads:
Emmanuel Jeffers-President
Kurvin Wallace-Vice President
Dwayne Warner-Treasurer
Serene Antoine-Secretary
