BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – COMMUTERS travelling between St. Kitts and Nevis will have to seek vessels other than Mark Twain to get to their destination due to a collision at sea on Saturday, November 27.

Information reaching SKNVibes indicated that at about 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, the Mark Twain had collided with a cargo vessel registered as Midnight Express.

When contacted, Director of Maritime Affairs McClean Hobson said the incident occurred in the vicinity of the Basseterre Harbour while the Mark Twain was travelling to Basseterre and the Midnight Express to St. Maarten.

He said the Mark Twain sustained some damage to the hull but, to his knowledge, no passenger onboard the vessel was injured.

“The Midnight Express continued on its heading following the accident and the matter is under investigation,” he said.

Hobson said his office has to gather information to determine what caused the accident and that they have to follow the procedure outlined in the “Casualty Investigation Code’ 2008 Edition”.

“Our responsibility is the safety and security of shipping and protection of the marine environment,” he added.

This media house was unsuccessful in its attempts to contact the owners of the two vessels, but learned that the Mark Twain is in the Charlestown Roadstead and temporarily out of commission.
