BASSETERRE St.Kitts, The St.Paul’s Masters completed a comprehensive victory over a depleted St.George’s team last evening at the Ramsbury grounds as they added another notch to their unbroken record of wins so far.
Merlin Liburd called right at the toss and elected to bat first. St.George’s started without the services of John Maynard and Charles Hendrickson who were both unavailable.
Merlin Liburd cracked the ball all around the Park even though he was let off very early in his innings and was dubiously given the benefit of the doubt from an appeal for run out.
He was partnered by a more stodgy Donovan Matthews who improved as his innings progressed.
The innings gained momentum however, when former West Indies batsman, Stuart Williams strolled to the crease and proceeded to play some exciting shots around the ground. He raced to his half century in little or no time and was threatening to make the first century of the tournament when his leg stump was spectacularly disturbed by a Franklyn Daniel yorker.
The St.Paul’s team managed an imposing 188 for four from their 20 overs.
The early response for St.George’s was equally exciting with a pumped up Elroy David bowling a couple of accurately delivered snorters at Junior Duncan Mills, one of which caught him flush in the helmet as he advanced down the pitch. Mills however responded with a superb hook shot over long leg for six.
Captain Curtis Morton at the other end looked good for his brief stay at the crease having flicked Gerard Charles for four then following that up with an audacious cut shot which whistled to the point boundary.
However, disaster struck in the very next over when after a slight mix up with Mills over a call for a single, he hastily turned to regain his crease, slipped and fell down mid pitch and was easily run out.
Thereafter G Sydney Newton went after Charles in emphatic fashion before he perished. Jaston Liburd was also impressive in his knock and Elroy Kelly remained resolute before he lost his wicket as the overs ran out.
Franklyn Daniel entertained with a few sixes to the end at the expense of Stuart Williams who served to make a few of the Gingerland batsmen look clueless to his guile and flight. St.George’s succumbing at 153 for 9 (effectively all out) in 18.1 overs.
