BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MEDIA practitioners in St. Kitts and Nevis were urged to remain true and loyal to their profession while maximising on opportunities for advance training in Taiwan.

This appeal was made by newly-accredited St. Kitts and Nevis Resident Ambassador of the Republic of China on Taiwan, His Excellency Miguel Li-Jey Tsao in an exclusive interview with SKNVibes.

He also pointed out that being guards of the fourth estate, the media have significant influence and power, and if used in the right direction would yield positive returns.

“The media are a powerful and very important set of people in any country, and once you use the power of your pen in the right direction there is certainly positive returns to be derived,” he said.

The Ambassador, his wife and senior employees of the Embassy and Taiwanese Mission were hosts to the media at his residence for a special appreciation dinner on November 27, where a number of media practitioners representing radio, television, newspaper and websites were represented.

Tsao told the practitioners that he was very privileged to have them at his home to partake in dinner, noting that he intends to forge a closer relationship with the media.

The Ambassador told SKNVibes that the media must recognise that they have a noble responsibility and profession which must be maintained if they are going to make meaningful contributions to the Federation’s advancement.

“As a reporter or journalist you must understand your responsibility to educate and inform and also your role of being factual, fair and balanced, regardless of your personal beliefs and opinions,” Ambassador Tsao said.

He urged the Federation’s media corps to remain committed to the rudiments of the profession in order to continue lifting the standards while playing a pivotal role in the development of St. Kitts and Nevis.

The Taiwanese Ambassador also advised that there should always be an atmosphere of cordiality and mutual respect among media operatives and all organisations as well as citizens and residents of the Federation; noting this could enhance the media corps’ ability in news gathering.

He declared that his embassy is willing to assist in providing training opportunities for media professionals, stressing that he would continue to have an open door policy to accommodate those seeking interviews and or clarification on any issue. He reminded that those within the media should continue to be very serious, committed and dedicated to the profession, while stating that his country has numerous opportunities for any practitioner who is interested in their personal development.

“My embassy is ready and willing to lend assistance in whatever way that we can, and I would like to reassure you of my willingness to assist,” he added.

Ambassador Miguel Li-Jey Tsao, in a demonstration of his embassy’s love and appreciation for the media, presented each practitioner at the dinner with a gift. He told them that as media practitioners it is pertinent that they have an opportunity of being privileged with some of the latest technological developments coming out of his country.
