In the Spirit of Christmas draws many to Basseterre

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE Circus in downtown Basseterre was transformed into a fun and family arena over the past three nights, as organisers of the traditional ‘In The Spirit Of Christmas’  declared the event open on Monday night (Dec. 6).

The five-night Department of Culture-sponsored event features entertainment from 7:30 p.m., which showcases various local artistes, community groups, instrumentalists, choirs, drummers, steel and string orchestras heralding the Christmas spirit.

The first night saw a special address given by Minister of Culture Hon. Marcella Liburd, who thanked the many persons that contributed to organising the event.

It was also filled with performances of Christmas carols rendered by staff members of the Social Services Community Development and Community Affairs, the Tahila Gospel Band, past winners of the Kittitian Superstar Competition Makilah and Charlie Miller, contestants of the 2010 National Carnival Queen and the Talented Teen Pageants.

According to Marlene Phillips, Research and Documentary Specialist in the Department of Culture, the opening night had a successful turnout. “The community showed its support and appreciation to the artists who kept them entertained until about 10:00 p.m.,” she added.

The night also saw dance performances by Sharon Ratan of Vivace Dance Company and Tameka Richards of Okolo Tegremantine.

In the Spirit of Christmas is an annual event which focuses on the real reason of the season and to keep Christ in the Christmas celebrations apart from the Carnival celebrations.

Phillips said since 1995, In the Spirit of Christmas has become a National tradition in the Federation, bringing together nationals and visitors of all ages and spreading love and goodwill to each other as the Christmas Season approaches.

Last night’s show included performances by Adrian Scantlebury, Zion Moravian Dancers and the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force Band.

Meanwhile, Minister LK, Shakki, Pepper Ranks, Coronets Steel Orchestra and Her Majesty’s Prison Choir are scheduled to perform tonight (Dec. 9).

The final night will be crowned with a special visit from Santa Claus, who will be distributing gifts to children.
