BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, DECEMBER 12TH 2010 (CUOPM) – The portion of the Irish Town Bay Road in front of the Gardens Housing which was severely damaged by high waves from the passage of Hurricane Tomas should be restored by December 16th, Chief Road Engineer at the Public Works Department, Mr. Kevin Williams said.
Mr. Williams told the Communications Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister (CUOPM) that restoration project include repairing the 160 meters length of damage sea wall and the laying of a rock armor defense of 250 meter of sea wall.
He said the works undertaken by the Public Works Department, along with Rock and Dirt Company include clearing and preparation of the area for works, which include filling and providing an area for equipment to maneuver and designing of a rock revetment to prevent further damage to future protection of the area.
“We had to building a breakwater defense to protect the working area, excavating and laying of filter fabric, placing of rock for sea defense, filling and compacting the carriage way and walk way, construction of a four feet retaining wall which can also be used for sitting and relaxing, construction of kerb and slipper and walk way and construction of the carriage way,” he said in an interview.
Mr. Williams said the paying of the area is to take place shortly.
Minister of Public Works, Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin, who visited the site on Friday afternoon expressed appreciation to Chief Road Engineer Mr. Williams and his team for designing, reconstruction and protection of the road and neighbouring property.
“We are near to completion of the revetment work, completion of the wall and sidewalk and am happy to report that the area will be open to vehicular traffic early in the new week,” said Minister Martin.
Paving of the road in the area is to begin shortly.
