BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE 2010 National Carnival, dubbed Sugar Mas, will be officially opened with a ceremony at the Sugar Mill from 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 17.
According to Carnival Chairman Clement O’Garro, the ceremony would be a brief 30-minute programme, because at 8:00 p.m. the venue would come alive with the first show of the Sugar Mas festivities, which is the Female Calypso Bacchanal and Best of the Rest Competition.
On Saturday (Dec. 18), the Soca Monarch Competition will take place. After a few days break, the activities will continue on Sunday, December 26 with the Beaumont Park’s Boxing Day Horse Race event.
On the following day, a number of bands, troupes and revellers will be jumping and waving through the streets of Basseterre, as J’Ouvert Morning will be held on that day.
Later that evening will see the Talented Teen and Junior Calypso Show, while on the following night, six contestants, in five segments, will be vying for the title of National Queen.
On Dec. 29, the National Queen will crown the winner of the LIME Senior Calypso Monarch show, then on Dec. 30 the contestants of the Miss Haynes Smith Caribbean Talented Teen will compete for the crown.
The Grand Carnival Parade, including the Children’s Parade, will be held on January 1, 2011, while the following day will feature the carnival cool down Beach Bash.
The activities will come to an end on January 3 with the Sugar Mas Last Lap Parade and jam session.
