Seven through to LIME Calypso Finals

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - AFTER a long night, Queen Anastasia, Astro, Pungwa, Kinta, Queen Jackie, Stitch In Time and I-Soursop were adjudged finalists for this year’s LIME Senior Calypso Monarch showdown.   

     


    The Semi-Finals took place last night (Dec. 16) at Carnival Village and those eliminated are Alamoulou, Lord Kut, Hollywood, Calypso Reggie, Idoni, Singing Angie, Ace and Blazer while Big Lice was chosen as the alternative for the finals.

     


    The show featured two rounds and in the first one Calypso Reggie got things started singing ‘Three Cheers’. During his performance, he presented the Hon. Marcella Lirburd with a bunch of flowers.

     


    He was quickly followed by veteran Kinta, who had an 11-year hiatus from the arena. He sang ‘Prince of Darkness’. Pungwa then came and gave a powerful performance of ‘Hang Dem’.

     


    Next was Lord Kut spreading the message of AIDS with ‘Promiscuous Philanderer’. He was followed by Stitch In Time who sang ‘Am Still In Love’, which the crowd seemed to have enjoyed as they sang along with him.

     


    It was then Big Lice’s time to shine, and his first song was ‘De Carnival Sick’.

     


    The first of the two Nevisian in the competition, Hollywood, then took the stage with ‘Hungry Youths’ while Blazer, dressed in a black suit with gold, shiny dollar signs, singing ‘Glitter of Gold’.

     


    I-Soursop then definitely made it hard for the crowd to miss him as he came on stage in a shiny gold suit singing ‘Calypso Say’. The reigning Female Calypso Queen, Singing Jackie, then gave a powerful rendition titled ‘Messages From the Drums’.

     


    Queen Anastasia followed, singing Anastasia For PM’ and received a standing ovation from members of the audience as she made her way offstage.

     


    She was followed by the final female competitor, Singing Angie with ‘Heaven Knows’. Ace then came onstage and carried his message of ‘Crime Don’t Pay’ loud and clear.

     


    The other Nevisian in the competition, Astro, did his piece called the ‘Vat Doctor’. It was then time for Alamoulou, who sang ‘Without Trust’. And the final competitor, Idoni, who, with a bang, brought the first segment to an end and received a standing ovation from some members of the audience with his ‘Are We Really Poor’ rendition.

     


    The first round then came to an end at 11:45 p.m. and it was straight into the second round without break.

     


    The second round began at 11:45 p.m. immediately after the first with Singing Angie get the ball rolling the ball with ‘A Little Something’. She was followed by Astro singing ‘De Crusade’, Queen Anastasia with ‘This I Believe’, Alamoulou with ‘The Bull Play’, Kinta with ‘Sentence To Die’, Pungwa with ‘Take the Old Clothes Off’, Queen Jackie with SKN Finest, I-Soursop with ‘A Mother’s Cry’, Stitch In Tme with ‘Sugar Mas’, Ace with ‘Cant Keep Me Down’, Idoni with ‘Jam Dem’, Calypso Reggie with ‘Hands On Deck’, Lord Kut with ‘Foot Soldiers’, Big Lice with ‘I Cant Believe’, Hollywood with ‘Prayer 2K11’ and Blazer singing ‘Pull Down That Strong Hole’.

     


    The finalists will go up against King Socrates, who will defend his crown with ‘Mortgage’ and ‘We’re Still Sorry’ on December 29.

     


    The show came to an end after 2:00 a.m.
