BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young woman and her family members are calling on the general public to assist the police with information that may lead to the arrest and prosecution of a hit and run driver.
Tasheba Liburd (26) of Saddlers was the victim of a ‘hit and run’ accident that occurred while she was walking with two friends in Laventon on Friday, December 17.
According to one of her friends, Shirlenn Boddie of Saddlers, she, another friend and Liburd were walking along Laventon on their way to catch a bus sometime after 9:00 p.m.
Boddie said they were walking and talking on the grassy shoulder of the road when she suddenly heard a loud noise.
“We heard bang, and then I saw my friend rolling on the grass in front of us,” she said.
Boddie said although Liburd was on the side with which the traffic flowed, she was walking on the grassy area.
She said the person who was driving stopped a distance from them, looked out the window of his car and then drove off.
“I was so frightened. I saw him when he looked out the car window…not sure if I would be able to recognize him. I didn’t see his face properly. I don’t know if he is dark or fair skin,” she said.
Boddie said the car that had hit her friend was not a new model. It was white with black rearview mirrors and one fell off the car during the accident.
SKNVibes was told that the accident occurred while the car was overtaking a minibus on a corner.
Boddie said the driver of the minibus stopped to assist them and offered to take them to the nearest hospital.
“We had also called the ambulance and they had said not to move her. But we had already moved her because she was bleeding from her mouth, her face and her elbow,” she said.
Liburd was taken to the Molineux Hospital where she was kept overnight and discharged the following day.
SKNVibes visited Liburd’s home yesterday morning (Dec. 19) and spoke to the young woman, who is recovering from the ordeal but still feeling some pain in her neck.
“I felt something hit me from the back and I was unconscious for a little while. When I catch myself I was still at the scene of the accident. I want to know who knock me. I don’t know if they didn’t have a licence or that the car was insured why they just drove off,” she said.
Her sister, Kethura Liburd, who learnt of the incident shortly after it occurred, said she does not believe the person was drunk.
“I don’t believe he was drunk; for how he was driving. We are hoping that with the missing mirror it would be able to lead to identifying the person, because they may want to get it fixed,” she said.
Police are currently investigating the matter.
Any person who may have information leading to the identity of the perpetrator is urged to contact the police.
