Soca Monarch performances leave patrons pleased

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CONTENDERS of the 2010 Beaumont Park Soca Monarch Competition displayed some excellent performances on Saturday night (Dec. 18), which left the huge crowd at the Sugar Mill amazed.

King Konris definitely proved that he is indeed unstoppable by taking the crown. In the First Runner-up position was X-Man out of Nevis with ‘Food All Over’ while Shakki took the Second Runner-up spot with ‘High For Carnival’ and the ‘SK Sweet’ singers C–Money and Rucas were awarded Third Runner-up.

The other nine contenders were Hot Rod singing ‘Pork For Dinner’; Rico, Righteous and Melbo singing ‘Get Wet’; Easy singing ‘Rudeness’; Mr. World singing ‘Swing Dem’; Queen Anastasia singing ‘St. Kitts’; Ras Kelly singing ‘Black Man’; Soca Samuel singing ‘Mommy Love’;  Shakal and Fire with ‘Hurricane’ and Kibbie, who was chosen as the alternative, took the place of De Provoker who dropped out at the last minute.

Each performance featured some creativity from the contenders who went from being chiefs to going onstage in forklifts and in harness. But the one that really had the crowd in awe was when the newly-crowned Soca Monarch King had a big truck drive through the venue with some footballers in it chanting the introduction of his winning song.

SKNVibes PEP spoke briefly with King Konris, who said, “I am thrilled about winning the Soca Monarch. I had an awesome time and I think the fans had a ball as well.”

Konris said he would like to give special mention to the hard work the committee had put in to make the show a reality, while thanking everyone who made the force impossible to stop.

The show was hosted by EK and Kevy-Kev out of Florida and featured Soca sensation Patch out of Trinidad. He performed his 2010 Soca hit ‘Pipe’ and a number of other songs, which kept the audience entertained while awaiting the judges’ decision.

The curtains came down on the Beaumont Park Soca Monarch Competition after midnight and many persons leaving the venue were heard saying how pleased they were with the judges’ decision and the overall production of the event.
