BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – QUICK reaction by members of the Basseterre Fire Department this morning (Dec. 21) prevented what may have been a disastrous episode in the lives of many in Church Street, Basseterre and its immediate surroundings.

Shortly before 10 o’clock, an alarm was raised that smoke was seen emanating from the generator room at Government Headquarters on Church Street, and this prompted employees to evacuate the building.

On arrival at the scene, SKNVibes saw two fire tenders and a number of firemen, who, in their usual professional manner, had quickly extinguished the flames which was said to be of an electrical nature.

This media house learned that the fire, which was relatively small, started at approximately 9:40 a.m. and the Fire Department was on the scene in just a few minutes of notification.

Chief Fire Officer Hester Rawlins told SKNVibes that the fire had burnt a number of wires and damaged a panel box in the generator room. He however did not state what caused the fire but indicated they were investigating.

Shortly after the firefighters had indicated that the fire was extinguished, employees of Government Headquarters who were gathered on Church and Central Streets returned to their respective offices in the building.
