BRADES, Montserrat (December 20, 2010) – Lots of fun was had by all and $5700 raised for youth sports at Sunday’s charity match between the His Excellency the Governor Peter Waterworth’s 11 and Chief Minister Reuben Meade’s 11 at the Little Bay Cricket Field.

The game was organized by Minister of Sports Colin Riley and Public Relations Officer Justin ‘Hero’ Cassell through the Committee for Community Youth Sports (CCYS), which is to benefit the development of district cricket teams for children.

The governor’s team included West Indian Pace Bowler Lionel Baker and veteran cricketer while Editor of The Montserrat Reporter Bennette Roach played and later provided commentary on the game.

Everyone got into the spirit of the game and giving including the governor who threw the first ball and the chief minister who batted. No one seemed concerned about the final score although the chief minister’s team was said to have won. The chief minister paid for members of the opposing team to be sent off the field because they were batting too well but they were later returned to play when some in attendance paid more money.

The funds were raised in a variety of ways, including paying for each run that players made. Governor Waterworth also had to jump on the children’s bouncy castle as a donor had contributed $50 for him to do so. It took more funds for him to get off.

Minister Colin Riley said he was pleased with the fundraising effort and plans to do more to return the island’s youth to active sports. He added that the charity match added more of the giving and volunteerism spirit that has been very apparent in this year’s ArrowFest 2010, which began last Friday.
