BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – DOWNTOWN Basseterre was in colours throughout yesterday (Dec. 23) as Folklore Avenue kicked off to ring in the Carnival Sugar Mas fever.
Masqueraders, clowns, mummies and the Mansion Bull all filled the streets with an array of excitement and had attracted many children, visitors and residents who went Christmas shopping.
Folklore Avenue is scheduled to take place at the upper section of Fort Street and on Port Zante from December 23 to 29.
In an earlier press release from the Department of Culture, dance specialist Lorna ‘Ava’ Henry said the Traffic Department of the St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force had authorised cultural performers to use the section above Central and Fort Streets and the area close to the main hall of Port Zante for the event.
She revealed that 13 cultural groups have expressed interest in performing, including Valon Masquerade Troupe, Jason Stinging Ants Clown Troupe, Mansion Bull, St. Peter’s Actors and Mocko Jumbies.
The excitement continues today and the Department of Culture is encouraging everyone to bring out their children to witness the folklore tradition, as they strive to keep it alive.
