By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers & Suelika Creque, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AMASSING a total of 336 points, Siobhan Phipps of the Immaculate Conception Catholic School was last night (Dec. 27) crowned the 2010/2011 CONTEC DT Miss Talented Teen at the Sugar Mill.

She was crowned by her predecessor, Zinga Imo, who had represented the same school before its change of name.

In addition to the crown, Phipps took the awards for Best Ambassadorial Speech and Best Interview, while Nekirah Nicholls of Washington Archibald High School took the First Runner-up spot with 327.5 points and won the prizes for Best Talent and Best Teenage Wear.

The Second Runner-up position went to Chadene Connor of Cayon High School with 324.5 points. She also won the award for Best Ambassadorial Wear and was closely followed by Gingerland High School’s representative Hydela Tyson on 323.5 points.

Early in the show, many patrons had voiced their belief that Nicholls would have been adjudged the winner as she gave an excellent dance performance in the Talent segment. However, that was not to be because she was obviously outdone by Phipps.

The other contestants were Dominique Pemberton of Saddlers Secondary School, Vernecia Wyatt of Charles E. Mills Secondary School, Brianda Harvey of Basseterre High School and Zaeisha Joseph of Verchilds High School.

The night also saw Leonardo ‘Calypso Leo’ Robinson of Cayon High School taking the crown in the Junior Calypso Monarch Competition with a rendition entitled ‘Infected With Rage’.

Representatives from 12 high schools participated in this competition and Kaliana ‘Lady Kali’ DeSuza of Dr. William Connor Primary School was adjudged First Runner-up. She sang a song called ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’.

The Second Runner-up position went to Shajunee ‘Singing Shadie’ Gumbs of Washington Archibald High School, whose piece was called ‘Dolly House’, while Rhassani ‘Mighty Sanni’ Gordon, also of Washington Archibald High, took the Third Runner-up spot with ‘Where Do We Go From Here’.

The defending Monarch, Karessa Willet, who sings under the name Mz Independence, did not participate in this year’s event. She had won the crown on two consecutive occasions.

One lucky lady left the show with a free ticket to the Miss National Queen Pageant after appearing onstage and singing a part of King Konris’s ‘Unstoppable Force’. The Pageant is scheduled for 8:00 tonight at the same venue.

The house band for last night’s shows was the Grand Masters.

The show, which ended shortly before 1:00 a.m., had an impressive turnout as many children were there in numbers to cheer the representatives of their respective their schools.
