BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – PERSONS were introduced to a new experience following the regular J’Ouvert jam on December 27 when they made their way down to the first ever J’Ouvert Beach Chill held behind the Old Treasury Building, which honoured local artiste Mic Stokes.
The event began shortly after 11 a.m. and attracted a large crowd that enjoyed the ‘cool down’ atmosphere after a hot J’Ouvert jam by jumping in the foam castle or making their way down the 40-foot water slide, while many others chilled and enjoyed the performances of the day.
Nearing the end of the event, the organisers honoured legendary performer and former member of Ellie Matt and the GI’s Brass, Mic Stokes, who had also won the Road March title on two occasions.
According to one of the organisers, Garfield Alexander, they honoured Stokes for the versatility he displayed during his extensive musical career.
Alexander said Stokes is a team player and appreciated the art form so much so that there were times when he would not take the spotlight, but play an instrument or be a part of a band.
Stokes was presented with an award and showed his appreciation by singing a song entitled ‘Music in Jail’ to which he received an encore. He followed up that performance with another one called ‘One Shot Man’.
Alexander said the event was all about promoting local talent and creating a family atmosphere that is much needed in St. Kitts.
He said he was pleased with the event despite experiencing some hiccups, which he noted were logged and would be taken into consideration during the planning phase for future events.
There were also performances by Lord Kent, Hot Rod, Shakki, X-Man, Konris and an impromptu performance by Imran of Small Axe Band, who sang the band’s newest hit, ‘Rum Song’.
Konris also had the crowd moving with ‘Unstoppable Force’, and he also received an encore, while models from S Model Management and Movado Model Agency made appearances in swimsuit designs by Petal Newton.
Giveaways were done, compliments Lime and TDC, as prizes were given to persons who answered questions correctly or those who had the most foam on their bodies.
In addition to Alexander, the event was organised by Mikal Manners and Sherlon Roland of GMS Multimedia, and gratitude was extended to all those involved and their sponsors.
Alexander said the event was streamed live via www.jouvert.beachchill.tv and it was just the first of more to come.
