Masters Parish League Finals set for Wednesday

Masters Parish league semis-Frank Monzac and wendell Wallace at the toss
By: Curtis Morton, Press Release

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis, January 10 2011 - The long overdue semi final match up between St.James’ and St.Thomas’ in the 2010/2011 Masters’ Parish league was finally played on Sunday 9th January at the Ramsbury grounds.  The match which had been postponed on several occasions due mainly to inclement weather was played in sunny conditions and witnessed by a small but enthusiastic crowd.

St.Thomas’ won the toss and batted first and at one point were struggling badly on forty-two for five. That’s when Samuel Williams was joined by Teddy ‘Blackman’ Liburd. The two then teamed up in an exciting partnership which saw Liburd mainly playing the anchor role, while Williams proceeded to play some exquisite shots all around the grounds. Liburd later even ventured to play a couple of gems of his own.

The St.Thomas’ innings eventually folded on 121 for 9 from their allotted 20 overs.

The St.James’ team was off to a poor start in their run chase when Alexis Jeffers was bowled by Lincoln Barry for 2 but Velly Maynard batted confidently alongside the in form Winston Sutton before he overbalanced in an attempted flick off Tony Grant and was brilliantly stumped by Eustace Johnson. Ardie Liburd then joined Sutton and after a slow start, also blossomed to play some terrific shots. A pull shot off Tony Grant than landed plush on the Eastern hillside, was a particular gem.

The St.James’ team cruised to the victory target in the 18th over and now qualifies for the grand finals versus St.Paul’s.

Summarized scores: St.Thomas’ 121 for 9 from 20 overs: Samuel Williams 50; Teddy Liburd 20; Eustace Johnson 15 and Tony Grant fourteen.

Winston Sutton four wickets; Wendell Wallace 3; Earl David 1 and Leroy Elliot 1.
    St.James’ 127 for 2 from 18 overs: Winston Sutton 57 n.o; Velly Maynard 32 and Ardie Liburd 23 n.o; Lincoln Barry 1 for 25 and Tony Grant 1 for 12

The finals will now be played on Wednesday 12th January at the same venue, commencing at 5pm.
