Press Release

North Sound, Antigua – Jamaica pulled off an astonishing 50 run victory after the Guyanese batting capitulated for a pathetic 65 chasing a modest 116 to win on the opening day of the Caribbean Twenty20 2011 at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds.

Guyana’s spin brigade kept Jamaica to a modest 115 for 7 from 20 overs but their batting imploded with only two batsmen (Travis Dowlin 14 and Royston Crandon 11) achieving double figure scores.

Fast bowler Andre Russell picked up 3 for 8 and seamer Dave Bernard – the Star-of-the-Match – picked up 2 for 17 from three overs to add to his 22 from 20 balls.

The defending champions, Guyana lost their first wicket at 12, then slid to 23 for 3 and 29 for 5. The Crandon brothers – Royston and Esuan (6) – then slightly stalled the slide with a 13 runs partnership for the sixth wicket. That was the best partnership of the innings as the Guyanese procession from the dug out continued.

They lost their last five wickets for 23 runs as the Jamaicans romped home.

Despite their modest score the Jamaicans fielded with astonishing efficiency, effecting three run outs – the most important being that of captain Ramnaresh Sarwan for a duck and Shiv Chanderpaul for 5. With the two senior Guyanese batsmen back they struggled to put runs on the board and seemed rudderless as the innings folded in the meekest of fashion.

Jamaica’s innings was bolstered by Marlon Samuels’ 42 as the Royston Crandon took 3 for 21.

    Summarized scores:

Jamaica-115 for 7 in 20 overs: Marlon Samuels forty-two; David Bernard 22 and Royston Crandon 3 for 21

Guyana—Sixty-five all out in 17.3 overs: Travis Dowlin Fourteen; Royston Crandon 11
Andre Russell 3 for 8; David Bernard 2 for 17
