The ruling St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party is throwing its full support behind Prime Minister, Hon. Dr.
Denzil L. Douglas and his Labour Party Administration, to reform what is said is a "flawed electoral system" introduced by the People's Action Movement (PAM) in 1983.
"The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party gave an assurance to the electorate and the country in general that it fully supports the Labour Administration of Prime Minister Douglas in its quest for reforming the flawed Electoral System which was introduced by the PAM Administration in November 1983, against strong protest by the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party," said a statement issued by the Labour Party Secretariat on Friday.
The Party was congratulating three-term Parliamentarian Hon. Rupert Herbert, whose re-election in October 2004 was confirmed by the Eastern Caribbean High Court when it dismissed a petition by the PAM Political Leader, Mr.
Lindsay Grant, who challenged the results. The Court had earlier dismissed a similar petition from PAM candidate, Mr. Glenroy Blanchette, challenging the re-election of four term Parliamentarian and Minister of Public Works, Utilities, Transport and Posts, Dr. the Hon. Earl Asim Martin.
The St. Kitts and Nevis National Assembly recently approved a resolution which outlined the broad parameters to achieve electoral reform and the process is expected to go into high gear now that the Nevis Island Assembly Elections are over.
The resolution, presented by St. Kitts and Nevis' Prime Minister Hon. Dr.
~~Adz:Right~~Denzil L. Douglas, calls for the establishment of several parliamentary and non-parliamentary committees, with specific tasks aimed at facilitating a comprehensive national consultation with all stakeholders leading to the implementation of a new electoral framework.
