X-Man hopes to represent Federation in Trinidad

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, January 13 2011 – THE name Delison Roper may not ring a bell to many, neither would his alias X-Man; however, hearing the name of his biggest hit - ‘Food All Over’ - will certainly definitely ring a bell in the heads of many since it has grown quite popular.

X-man, who is originally from sister isle Nevis, said he started singing at a tender age but only after singing a song as a form of punishment while in the fourth grade did his musical ability emerge.

This Nevisian possesses a powerful voice which immediately catches one’s attention.

Speaking exclusively with SKNVibes PEP, Roper said he had auditioned for a role in the Kassanova Band and was told that he filled the criteria. He said that in a jocular manner the members told him, “X mark the spot”, and that remark gave birth to his stage name – X-Man.

That was in 2002, and since then he has become a key member of the band and one of the lead vocalists.

It was in 2010 the radio personality of VON Radio started receiving more recognition after penning and recording ‘Food All Over’ for that year’s Culturama celebrations.

In response to what prompted him to produce the song, Roper said, “I overheard a conversation between a man and a woman. The man was telling the woman, ‘Miss you so sexy, you got food all over.’ I could not help myself but to laugh, and I decided I had to write a song about that.”

In his explanation of its meaning, he said everyone has their own interpretation and he does not want to spoil that for anyone. “Therefore, I would leave it open and let the interpretations go with age,” he added.

The catchy ‘Food All Over’ song also has a music video that was released in December. According to Roper, the video was recently accepted by Tempo and should be seen on that music station shortly.

He said the song has done so much for him and he could only be thankful.

Although the song placed last in Nevis for the Road March title in 2010, he was declared First Runner-up in the recently concluded Soca Monarch Competition, and he noted that he is keeping his fingers crossed to represent the Federation in the International Groovy Soca Monarch to be held in Trinidad.

Roper said he is hoping to take his career to the next level and would love his name to be known not only in St. Kitts and Nevis but also regionally and internationally.

He used the opportunity to say thank you to his fans and everyone who supported him during the Soca Monarch Competition, which he thinks was of a very high standard.

“I am now in the writing process trying to get thoughts and ideas for Culturama 2011,” he added.

‘Food All Over’ has made  its way on music charts in and around the Caribbean, including the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Antigua and also in the UK.

In a recently published article by this media house, Chairman of the National Carnival Committee Clement O’Garro said they had sent a video of Roper performing ‘Food All Over’ to the organisers of the International Soca Monarch Show in Trinidad with the aim of them selecting the Nevisian to compete in the Groovy Soca Monarch Competition. However, they are waiting word of their approval.
