BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A total of 42 cases are scheduled to be heard during the January Criminal Assizes which begins today (Jan. 18) at the Basseterre High Court.

Of the 42 cases, 22 were traversed from the previous assizes, including five for murder, while the new cases include three murders.

The traversed murder cases are those of Delvin Jeremiah Benjamin; Nelson Challenger, Shenroy Francis, Jami Rawlins, Glenroy Smithen and Moses Gardener; Amal Whyte and Devon Fyfield; Curtlee Rogers and Alpha Duporte; and Jahdell Browne, who was also charged with grevious bodily harm.

There are four unlawful carnal knowledge, three rape and four robbery cases to be heard.

Michale Kelly, Devon Williams and Jevon Allen were charged with causing death of another person. This charge resulted from an accident that occurred at about 3:15 p.m. on August 11, 2009 at the junction of Farm’s Road and Island Main Road, where motorcar R173 driven by Allen struck Howard Hensley of Halfway Tree and Keith Brombill of Stapleton Village who were working in a trench in the road.

While Hensley’s hip and leg were injured, Brombill was pronounced dead on scene by the District Medical Officer.

Reports had also stated that after the men were struck, Allen drove the vehicle away from the scene in an attempt to avoid police capture, but was caught while in Old Road.

Sylvester Allen will also appear in the High Court, charged with causing death by careless driving. He was charged for causing the death of 57-year-old Terrence Browne of Brighton Estate on Tuesday, July 28, 2009.

There are also several breaking and entering cases including those of Asgailli Rogers, Marvin Whyte, Calvin Samuel and Alexis Hodge.
