Grandmother pleads not guilty in High Court

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MELVINA KELLY of Saddlers Village who was charged with the July 11, 2010 murder of her eight-year-old granddaughter, Belisha Edwards, pleaded not guilty at her arraignment at the Basseterre High Court on Tuesday, January 18.

     

    Kelly, who arrived in court under a Woman Police Constable escort, was told by His Lordship Justice Errol Thomas that her trial date would be announced later in the assizes.

     

    She however declared that she did not have a defence counsel and Dr. Henry Browne volunteered to represent her.

     

    Meanwhile, other arraignments made included Sheldon Augustus who was charged with the offence of indecent assault of a 10-year-old female. He however pleaded not guilty to the crime which occurred in Molineux on March 7, 2010.

     

    Jevon Allen and Mickhale Kelly, who were jointly charged for causing death of another person, had their charges withdrawn after the preliminary inquiry (PI) in 2009. However, Devon Williams, who was also charged with the same offence, had his charge upheld and appeared before the court.

     

    The charges dropped against Allen and Kelly at the PI were not relayed to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), who informed the court that she still had their names on the list. She however asked his Lordship for time to make the amendments.

     

    Asgarilli Rogers, charged with building breaking, larceny and receiving, pleaded not guilty to the offences which occurred on February 23, 2010. It is alleged that he broke into the home of Adora Warner of Basseterre and stole a DVD player, Laptop, cellular phones and a digital camera to the total value of EC$7,666.95.

     

    Sheldon Maloney pleaded not guilty to indecently assaulting a female in Cayon on July 31, 2009, while Devon Albertine pleaded guilty to wounding Myron Charles with intent to do him grievous bodily harm on June 12, 2010. He will be sentenced on Thursday, February 3.

     

    Julian Benjamin was charged with wounding with intent and unlawfully wounding Xavier Gumbs on January 1, 2010 in Parsons Ground. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

     

    Emmanuel Mills pleaded not guilty to three charges. It is alleged that he, on July 29, 2010 in Saddlers Village, committed the crimes of rape, assault with intent to rob, burglary and breaking and entering with intention to steal.

     

    Jervin Dowell plead not guilty to two charges which occurred on January 19, 2010 at the Bentel Drive, Bird Rock home of Antonio Nias, where he allegedly committed the offence of house breaking and larceny, stealing items to the value of EC$5,340. He was also charged with receiving a Dell Inspiron belonging to Nias.

     

    Murder accused Denver Fyfield pleaded not guilty to the offence which occurred sometime during June 20-21, 2010 in St. Peters. He is accused of killing Hendricks Roberts.

     

    James Hodge pleaded not guilty to indecent assault of a female in Phillips Village on October 2009, while Craig Bradshaw pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl at West Street, Basseterre in July 2009.

     

    Leon Clarke also pleaded not guilty to unlawful carnal knowledge of a 13-year-old girl in Tabernacle on September 17, 2010. He was charged with house breaking with intent.
